Indigenous reconciliation is a crucial process aimed at healing relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. It focuses on recognizing historical injustices, such as colonization and the residential school system, that had caused lasting harm to Indigenous communities. Listening to Indigenous stories and acknowledging their pain is essential for building empathy and trust.

The spirit of reconciliation is recognizing past injustices, such as colonization and forcible removal from ancestral lands. These historical events caused deep wounds and hardships that continue to affect Indigenous communities today. True reconciliation requires actively listening to the experiences of Indigenous peoples, gaining a meaningful understanding of their histories, and recognizing the impact of past injustices. This listening process fosters empathy and creates a foundation for trust.

The intention behind reconciliation is to promote mutual respect and equality. For example, initiatives such as the have laid out specific . These actions focus on improving education, healthcare, and employment opportunities for Indigenous peoples. The intention is not just to offer an apology but to create real change that addresses the inequalities faced by Indigenous communities.

The spirit and intentions of Indigenous reconciliation are centered around healing, respect, and collaboration. It requires acknowledging past wrongs and moving towards a future where Indigenous peoples are valued and included in all aspects of society. By working together, we can foster a more just and equitable university where the voices and rights of Indigenous peoples are recognized and respected.

Faculties, departments, and administrative units are encouraged to align their internal plans and priorities with the Indigenous Strategic Framework and Initiatives Plan.

Every year, we will come forward with a set of Spirit and Intentions to guide students, faculty and staff in bringing to life the Strategic Framework and advance in Reconciliation.

Spirit and Intentions for 2024-2025

Spirit and Intentions 2024-2025 is addressed to all students, faculty, and staff and the University community at large. While some intentions have already been realised, other actions are still in progress, and some have not yet started. We ask Faculties, academic departments and administrative units to take note of the actions identified in the Spirit and Intentions Plans and to align their priorities, operations and processes accordingly.
