Ms. Sara K. Tennant's Master of Arts - Island Studies thesis defense will take place in the Atlantic Veterinary College, Room 287 North on November 6 from 8:30-10:30am. The title of the thesis is: " 'Almost Islands': A Research Synthesis of Aboriginal Communities in Canada as Metaphorical Islands." All are welcome. The ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú Student Union will be involved again this year in next month's Movember campaign. Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches around the world. Through the power of the moustache, vital funds and awareness are raised to combat prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health challenges. Movember encourages men to join the movement by growing a moustache for the 30-days of November. Movember’s not just for Mo Bros. Mo Sistas are an important part of Movember’s success. Once registered, Mo Sistas raise funds and encourage the men in their lives to get involved. Essentially, Mo Sistas do everything that Mo Bros do, without a Mo. To join the ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú team, please go to The following is a list of Movember events at ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú: Monday, November 4: Movember at ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú Kick-off, 12:30–1:30 pm Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to drop by the Student Centre to learn more about the Movember cause and the various issues surrounding men's health. Movember merchandise will also be available as well as Movember progress photo opportunities, better known as a "Mo-Shot." Attendees can also be entered in the 'Biggest Mo on Campus' (BMOC) challenge. November 13, 20, and 27: BMOC & Miss Movember Challenge, 11:30 am–1:30 pm Drop by the Student Centre and get your stache photographed, or participate in a Movember themed challenge! November 20: Movember Trivia Night, 8:30 pm The Wave and it's new trivia host will be providing a great night of manly and men's health related questions. November 21: STI Screening Clinic, 9:00 am–4:00 pm Opportunity for male students, faculty, and staff to participate in a free STI screening clinic at the Campus Health Centre. Dr. Tamara Franz-Odendaal, Developmental Biologist and Morphologist at Mount Saint Vincent University, who specializes in craniofacial development and anatomy in vertebrates, will be on campus on Monday, November 4 for a presentation and discussion. Dr. Franz-Odendaal is interested in learning how she can support women in science and engineering at ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú; and she will also share her experiences, and delve into the possibility of Island-WISE. Dr. Franz-Odendaal is the NSERC Chair—Atlantic Region of Women in Science and Engineering. Her presentation takes place on November 4, 2:30–3:30 pm, Main 320. All are welcome to attend. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
Respiratory Protection Training will be offered by Larry Koughan of All-Tech Environmental Services on Wednesday, November 13 from 9:00-11:00 am in AVC 280N. This session will provide information regarding the care, selection, and use of respirators. Whether you currently have a respirator, or if you think you may need one for certain work tasks, then you should attend this session (annually). This is also an important educational opportunity for those who supervise work involving individuals who may need respiratory protection. There is no cost to attend this training as it is covered by the Health and Safety budget. To register for the training session, please contact Lacey Myers at ljmyers@upei.ca or 566-0605. To view the Respiratory Protection Program please see Section 4.9 in the ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú Laboratory Safety Manual. . * Prior to using a respirator, individuals are required to complete a ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú Respirator User Screening Form and send it to HR. ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú will host a public meeting to release the findings and recommendations of the external review that was conducted to examine the Institute of Island Studies and its interconnectivity with other ºÚÁÏÀÏ˾»ú and community programs. Mike Randall of Engage Atlantic will lead a moderated discussion on each of the six categories of recommendations.
